Philanthropy and Community

In 2016, Sysco introduced a new community giving strategy focused on an area that’s a natural fit for us: food. As part of this new strategy, our goal is to direct 75 percent of our community donations and volunteerism toward hunger relief initiatives across North America.

Sysco has a long history of feeding children through our partnership with Share Our Strength. Now we’re excited to not only reach children, but to focus on families and seniors as well.

This approach has already been implemented at Sysco’s Houston Headquarters. As a result, Sysco’s Corporate office has made significant five-year commitments to Houston Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, which will provide the community with the following benefits:

In addition, our Corporate headquarters has an ongoing partnership with United Way of Greater Houston. We directed our 2017 United Way gift to agencies in the hunger and feeding space, which should provide more than 212,000 meals in the Greater Houston area.

Sysco also partners in Houston with Kids’ Meals, Target Hunger, Urban Harvest, Brighter Bites, and American Red Cross. While getting food where it’s needed is our primary goal, our secondary focus areas include education programs that foster a skilled workforce, and providing job opportunities for veterans.

Sysco’s operating companies independently manage their community giving and volunteer programs within the areas they serve, and will be implementing a similar hunger relief strategy over the next few years. By working together to rally around a single cause – getting healthy and nutritious food where it’s needed – we can create truly worthwhile change in our communities.
