Clean the World

Every year, millions of hygiene-related deaths are prevented thanks to efforts by Orlando-based Clean the World and partners like Guest Supply, a Sysco company, and Sysco customer Hilton.

Clean the World’s mission is to collect and recycle soap and hygiene products discarded every day by more than 4,000 hotel and resort partners and distribute these and other donated products to impoverished people.

According to Clean the World statistics, hygiene-related deaths, most often caused by unsafe water, inadequate sanitation or insufficient hygiene, kill approximately 1.8 million people per year. These diseases also contribute to malnutrition, stunted growth, increased healthcare costs and time lost at school or work. The good news is that research studies have demonstrated that the associated risks can be reduced 44-47 percent through hand-washing interventions.

When Clean the World made the move to launch a European operation last October, founder and CEO Shawn Seipler turned to Guest Supply for collaboration and assistance.

Since 2009, Guest Supply has supported Clean the World’s mission with assistance in areas including logistics, soap donations, manufacturing consultation, sales and marketing support and by contributing items for hygiene kits. Seipler says the ongoing assistance from Guest Supply is a testament to the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility.

“It is our goal at Guest Supply to help in making the life-saving efforts of Clean the World as successful and far-reaching as possible,” said Paul Xenis, President & COO of Guest Supply. “We have leveraged this sustainability program as a foundation to build a culture of social responsibility and we are proud to partner on this European expansion initiative.”

Most recently, Hilton launched a major expansion on the industry’s largest soap recycling program to help communities in need. 1,370 hotels will now participate, including all 750 properties in its All Suites Brands (Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites and Home2 Suites). This program is now a brand standard and has already donated more than four million bars of soap.
